Definition-first writing: the golden rule of LLM-citable FAQs

Definition-first writing puts the short definition at the top and structures the rest around it. The golden rule of LLM-citable FAQs.

1. The definition-first principle

Definition-first means: the first sentence of an FAQ answer carries the complete, self-sufficient definition, with no prior context. A human reader can skip it without missing anything. An LLM can extract it as-is to answer a question.

It is the opposite of classical editorial practice that frames context first. In 2026 GEO this inversion is worth four to nine citation rate points on Perplexity per Proema Insight internal regressions.

2. Why LLMs extract the first paragraph

Perplexity, ChatGPT and Claude LLMs use retrieval that splits content into 40 to 200 word chunks, then selects the most relevant chunks to assemble an answer. The first chunk of an FAQ answer is mechanically the most extracted because it is also the best semantically referenced.

Putting the definition first maximises the probability that this first chunk is self-sufficient. If the first chunk only contains context (“In specialty coffee, there exists…”), it is not usable in isolation.

3. The optimal extractive format

A GEO-optimised FAQ answer follows: definition sentence (15 to 30 words), precision sentence (15 to 25 words), example or context paragraph (40 to 80 words), bullet list if applicable (3 to 5 short items). Total: 80 to 150 words.

Beyond 150 words citation value decays. Below 80 the answer is rated too shallow by the LLMs’ internal ranking.

4. Before/after example

Before, not citable: “When we talk about specialty coffee, it is important to understand it as a distinct category that emerged in the 2000s. Specialty coffee is defined as a coffee scoring 80 or higher on the SCAA scale.”

After, citable: “Specialty coffee is a green coffee scoring 80 points or higher on the SCAA scale. The definition, formalised by the Specialty Coffee Association in 1982, separates this segment from commercial standard coffee.” Same information, inverted order, triple citation rate.

5. How to audit existing FAQs

A definition-first audit runs in two passes. First: extract the first sentence of each FAQ answer and check it starts with a copula verb or formal definition. Second: test on Perplexity to measure the citation rate gap before and after revision.

On the GEO Rocket portfolio, the definition-first refactor was applied to 4,604 questions on expertcafe.be and 2,134 on zeroproof.one. Measured ROI: +6.2 average points on Perplexity citation rate over 90 days.

The first sentence of an FAQ answer determines 60 to 75% of its citation probability. Put the definition there.
