What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

Quick answer

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of structuring a brand's content and authority so it gets cited by generative answer engines, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Apple Intelligence. Central metric: citation rate, the share of relevant queries where the brand appears in the synthesised answer.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), concretely?

For twenty-five years the search engine worked as an index: the user typed a query, the engine returned ten blue links, the user arbitrated. SEO meant ranking in the top three. The click was the final conversion. That mechanic is still alive but it has lost its monopoly on the informational query.

By 2026, ChatGPT processes roughly 2 billion queries per day (OpenAI announcements relayed by TechCrunch on 27 February 2026: ~900 million weekly active users). Perplexity exceeds 800 million queries per month (Similarweb, March 2026). Google AI Overviews surface on most informational queries in English and French. At those volumes, the user no longer receives a list of links: they receive a synthesised answer with one to six sources cited at the foot. The click becomes residual; the citation becomes the conversion.

Operational definition

GEO is the set of technical and editorial practices that maximise the probability that a generative answer engine cites a brand as a source in its response. It works across four dimensions: machine-readable structure (llms.txt at root, dense Schema.org JSON-LD, native hreflang, robots.txt allowing LLM retrieval bots), citable semantic density (short self-contained answers at the top of each page, expert development below, structured tables and FAQs), verifiable external authority (Wikidata entry with sameAs to official profiles, indexed press, coherent knowledge graph on LinkedIn, Crunchbase, OpenCorporates), and continuous measurement (versioned citation testing protocol, vertical question panel, per-LLM and per-language tracking, AI Crawl Control monitoring on 24+ bot user-agents).

The central metric: citation rate

Citation rate measures the percentage of relevant queries in a vertical that produce an LLM response citing the brand as a source. It is the north metric of GEO. Three protocols coexist in practice: Express (30 questions × 5 engines, 5-day first read), In-Depth (250 questions × 3 languages × 5 engines, 12-month roadmap), Continuous (vertical panel, monthly refresh). PROEMA practises all three across the GEO Rocket portfolio (expertcafe.be, zeroproof.one, expertvin.be) before deploying with clients.

GEO is not SEO

SEO and GEO are not substitutes. An excellent SEO site can be completely absent from the answer layer; a GEO-native site retains excellent classic SEO. "The difference between SEO and GEO is structural: an index engine ranks pages on keywords, an answer engine synthesises sources on intent," explains Lorenzo Eeman, founder of PROEMA. SEO encodes rank; GEO encodes citation. The useful first-mover window is 18-36 months, defensible thereafter for 3-5 years (PROEMA internal rule).
