State of GEO in May 2026, where do premium B2B brands actually stand?

1.6 billion ChatGPT queries per day. 30% of searches inside a chatbot. Factual audit on premium B2B brands and the five GEO indicators that matter in May 2026.

The numbers that define May 2026

The discipline that did not have a name three years ago now has a measurable footprint. ChatGPT crossed 900 million weekly active users in February 2026 per OpenAI’s public communications (TechCrunch, February 27, 2026); the engine processes an estimated 1.6 billion queries daily by Q2 2026. Perplexity reports 15 million weekly active users in early 2026, with monthly query volumes between 1.2 and 1.5 billion. Google AI Overviews appears on 13% of all queries globally and 36-47% of informational queries in Europe (DigitalApplied benchmark, March 2026). Microsoft Copilot is bundled inside Bing and the Edge browser. Anthropic Claude crossed 9 million paid business users by Q1 2026 per the company’s public investor materials.

The behavioural shift is documented in primary sources. A Bain & Company survey published in February 2026 found that 80% of US consumers rely on AI-generated summaries for at least 40% of their searches. SimilarWeb (March 2026) reports a 7% year-on-year decline in organic publisher traffic, concentrated on informational and how-to queries. Gartner’s 2024 prediction, that classical search traffic would drop 25% by 2026 because of generative answer engines, is tracking inside the predicted range on the informational subset.

The five GEO indicators that matter today

From the production work we run inside the GEO Rocket portfolio (expertcafe.be, zeroproof.one, expertvin.be) and the PROEMA client roster, five indicators have stabilised as the diagnostic standard. They each measure a different layer of the GEO programme; together they constitute the PGSM v1.0 grid we published in March 2026. Each is reproducible inside seven business days at low cost.

Indicator 1, citation rate per engine

Measured against a frozen 100-300 prompt panel across the five reference engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot), the citation rate is the share of prompts where the brand appears in the synthesized answer. A Q1 2026 panel of 50 premium Belgian B2B brands measured by PROEMA found a median citation rate of 2.1% on ChatGPT, 0.8% on Perplexity, 1.4% on Claude. The brands in the top decile of the panel reached 18-24% on the same engines, illustrating the gap that GEO programmes can close.

Indicator 2, entity coverage

Measured as the share of prompts where the brand’s name, founder and primary services are correctly resolved by the engine (no hallucination, no confusion with a namesake). The Q1 2026 baseline on the same 50-brand panel was 41%, meaning four out of ten prompts produced an inaccurate or partial entity resolution. The lever is Wikidata coverage: brands with a Wikidata entry and explicit sameAs links reached 73-88% entity coverage versus 28% for brands without.

Indicator 3, llms.txt and structural compliance

Binary measurement: does the brand publish a valid llms.txt at the root, does the site have JSON-LD coverage on at least 80% of indexable pages, does the Schema.org Organization block contain sameAs links to Wikidata, LinkedIn and at least one press article. Of the 50 Belgian brands measured in March 2026, 18% had a published llms.txt, 36% had JSON-LD on more than 80% of pages, 12% had a Wikidata entry. The compounded compliance rate (all three) was 4%.

Indicator 4, first-mover position in the category

Measured as the brand’s share of voice in the answer layer for the five most strategic category queries. A position above 25% indicates a first-mover lock; a position below 8% indicates the window is still open for the brand or for any competitor. The GEO Belgium Barometer 2026 (PROEMA, March 2026) found four already-closed verticals on the Belgian market (banking, energy, telecom, large retail), six with an 18-month residual window, and four wide-open verticals (HR tech, regtech, ESG consulting, AI services).

Indicator 5, citation depth and stability

A brand can be cited once and never again, or it can be cited consistently across re-queries. Citation depth measures the average number of citations per ten re-queries of the same prompt; citation stability measures whether those citations persist over a 30-day window. Brands with depth above 6/10 and 30-day stability above 70% have locked in a defensible position. Brands with depth below 3/10 are still in the experimental phase even if they show occasional citations.

The GEO market today resembles the SEO market in 2003. The mechanics are known, the tooling exists, the demand is visible, but the supply side is fragmented and most premium B2B brands have not yet allocated budget. The next 18 months close that gap.

Where French-speaking B2B brands actually stand

The French-speaking premium B2B segment lags the English-speaking equivalent by approximately 9-12 months on adoption. The PROEMA panel run in April 2026 on 30 CAC 40 and BEL 20 brands found 72% with zero citations on their own primary category across the five reference engines. The average delta with their classical Google visibility was -28 points. Three structural causes recur in the diagnostic. First, a defensive robots.txt that blocks GPTBot or ClaudeBot, 41% of measured sites. Second, no typed Person or Organization JSON-LD on leadership pages, 73% of sites. Third, compact non-extractive copy with paragraphs over 150 words and no clear 60-80 word answer blocks, 88% of sites.

The Dutch-speaking and German-speaking equivalents fare slightly better on technical hygiene but worse on entity linkage; the Iberian and Italian markets lag the French market by an additional 3-6 months. The Northern European markets (Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands) are closer to the English-speaking benchmark than to the continental European median.

What the next 12 months will close

Three movements are visible inside the GEO Rocket portfolio and the PROEMA client data. One, the first-mover window on premium B2B verticals will close in 18 to 36 months depending on category, sooner on HR tech and AI services where the prompt volume is high and growing, later on niche industrial verticals where the prompt volume is lower. Two, the major SEO suites are integrating answer-engine measurement (Semrush AI Toolkit, Ahrefs Brand Radar, SE Ranking AI Toolkit) which will commoditise the diagnostic layer and shift the moat to the editorial and entity-graph layers. Three, regulators will move on disclosure, the EU AI Act Article 50 paragraph 4 obligation on AI-generated content disclosure takes effect August 2026 and will require operators to maintain a clear human-review log for any LLM-assisted output published on a brand’s site.

For a premium B2B brand that has not yet allocated GEO budget: the next 90 days are decisive. The diagnostic costs less than €5,000 and answers three questions, is the first-mover window in your category still open, what is your current citation rate baseline, which of the five indicators is the cheapest to fix first. A brand that captures position before end-2026 defends 18 to 36 months at a fraction of the cost of catching up in 2027 or 2028.
